BioExcel - Centre of Excellence for Computational Biomolecular Research
The BioExcel Center of Excellence supports academia and industry with the usage of advanced techniques for high-end computing. Our mission is to enable scientists to fully exploit the power of data and computing e-infrastructure by providing support to non-experts and advanced users; improving the performance and functionality of key applications; and developing user-friendly computational workflows. Our vision is for BioExcel CoE to become a focal point for advances in software development, knowledge exchange and support, as well as a networking facilitator for the wider community of computational biomolecular researchers.
CoeGSS - Centre of Excellence for Global System Science
Developing evidence and understanding concerning Global Systems and related policies is rapidly becoming a vital challenge for modern societies. It is being tackled by the newly-emerged scientific domain of Global Systems Science (GSS).
High Performance Computing is reaching the level of an ultimate tool empowering GSS to address extremely complex societal and scientific problems. High Performance Data Analysis (HPDA) is thus the key to the success of GSS in the next decade! A key contribution of the Centre of Excellence for Global Systems Science will be the development of an HPC-based framework to generate customized synthetic populations for GSS applications. By enriching GSS applications to be fully supported by state-of-the-art HPC technologies, we will be able to provide decision-makers and civil society with detailed analyses, including real-time assessments, of global risks and opportunities. CoeGSS will work with an integrative toolbox for global systems analysis and it carries out three pilot studies to apply these methods to selected global challenges.
CompBioMed - Centre of Excellence in Computational Biomedicine
Computational Methods, based on human biology, are now reaching maturity in the biomedical domain, rendering predictive models of health and disease increasingly relevant to clinical practice by providing a personalized aspect to treatment. Computer based modelling and simulation is well established in the physical sciences and engineering, where the use of high performance computing (HPC) is now routine.
CompBioMed is a user-driven Centre of Excellence in Computational Biomedicine, to nurture and promote the uptake and exploitation of high performance computing within the biomedical modelling community. Our user communities come from academia, industry and clinical practice.
E-CAM - European HPC Centre of Excellence
E-CAM is an e-infrastructure for software development, training, and industrial discussion in simulation and modelling. It has a 60 month duration (starting from October 2015) and involves 48 staff years of effort.
At E-CAM we focus on four scientific areas of interest to computational scientists: Classical Molecular Dynamics, Electronic Structure, Quantum Dynamics and Meso- and Multi-Scale Modelling.
We aim to:
Develop software modules to be used in academia and industry to solve simulation and modelling problems.
Provide information and opportunities for discussion on leading-edge simulation and modelling techniques.
Train the next generation of computational scientists from both industry (new managers and computing specialists) and academia (post-graduates and postdocs).
EoCoE - Energy oriented Centre of Excellence
The Energy oriented Centre of Excellence in computing applications (EoCoE: read as “Echo”) uses the tremendous potential offered by the ever-growing computing infrastructure to foster and accelerate the European transition to a reliable low carbon energy supply using HPC (High Performance Computing).
EoCoE is structured around a central Franco-German hub coordinating a pan-European network, gathering a total of eight countries and twenty-one partners. Its partners are strongly engaged in both HPC and energy fields; this is a prerequisite for the long-term sustainability of the Centre of Excellence EoCoE and for ensuring that EoCoE is deeply integrated in the overall European strategy for HPC.
ESiWACE - Centre of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe
We are a new initiative of the HPC ecosystem in Europe and we leverage two established European networks: the European Network for Earth System modelling (ENES) representing the European climate modelling community and the world leading European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). A main goal of ESiWACE is to substantially improve efficiency and productivity of numerical weather and climate simulation on high-performance computing platforms by supporting the end-to-end workflow of global Earth system modelling in HPC environment.
Besides, with regard to the upcoming exascale era, ESiWACE will establish demonstrator simulations, which will be run at highest affordable resolutions (target 1km). This will yield insights into the computability of configurations that will be sufficient to address key scientific challenges in weather and climate prediction.
NOMAD - The Novel Materials Discovery
Surprisingly, extreme-scale aspects of Big-Data are very much under-explored in materials science and engineering, one reason being that ‘towards exascale’ computing initiatives typically focus on standard hardware and software challenges. Clearly, much of the value of high-throughput calcula-tions is wasted without deeper Big-Data driven analysis of the results. This is the extreme-scale computing challenge addressed by NOMAD.
NOMAD, the Novel Materials Discovery Laboratory, is a European Centre of Excellence (CoE) which was established in fall 2015. Eight complementary research groups of highest scientific standing in computational materials science along with four high-performance computing (HPC) centers form the synergetic core of this CoE.
